The Recording Academy has revived the category after a 10-year hiatus, recognizing visual artistry in music packaging.

The Recording Academy announced on Monday that it will reintroduce a Grammy Award category for Best Album Cover Design, reviving a category that was discontinued in 2016 due to declining physical album sales. The category will debut at the 2027 Grammy Awards.

"In an era of streaming, the visual presentation of music has become more important than ever," said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. "Album art continues to be a vital form of artistic expression, and the Grammy Awards should recognize that."

The category will accept submissions for both physical and digital album artwork, with separate classifications for each format. A panel of graphic designers and art directors will evaluate submissions based on creativity, technical execution, and relevance to the music.

The announcement has been welcomed by graphic designers and art directors who have long advocated for the category's return. "Album art is a unique art form that deserves recognition," said designer Noma.

Several artists have already announced plans to create special edition physical releases specifically for Grammy consideration. The category is expected to generate significant interest among both artists and collectors.
