The Northern Irishman captures the Claret Jug by three strokes in a dramatic final round.

Rory McIlroy claimed his third major championship on Sunday, winning The Open Championship by three strokes after a masterful final round of 65 that featured five birdies in his last seven holes.

McIlroy entered the final round one stroke behind leader Robert MacIntyre but produced a back-nine surge that proved decisive. His eagle at the 16th hole, a 40-foot putt from the fringe, sealed the victory and sent the St Andrews crowd into celebration.

"To win The Open at St Andrews is something I have dreamed about since I was a kid," McIlroy said through tears during the trophy ceremony. "This is the home of golf, and to have my name on the Claret Jug alongside the greatest players in history is incredibly special."

The victory marks McIlroy's first major since winning the 2014 PGA Championship and ends an 11-year drought that had led some to question whether he would add to his major total. The Northern Irishman is now tied for 11th on the all-time major winners list.

Scottie Scheffler finished second, four strokes back, while MacIntyre took third place in his first major championship as a professional. The result solidifies McIlroy's position as world number one and favorite for the upcoming PGA Championship.

McIlroy's victory was celebrated across the golf world, with past champions and analysts praising his ability to perform under pressure. "When the moment was biggest, Rory played his best," said NBC golf analyst and former champion Gary Faldo.
