The music streaming giant will offer lossless CD-quality audio for all Premium subscribers.

Spotify announced a significant upgrade to its streaming quality on Tuesday, unveiling lossless audio streaming at no additional cost for all Premium subscribers. The new audio quality tier will deliver CD-quality audio at 1411 kbps, matching the offerings of competitors Apple Music and Tidal.

The announcement marks a reversal of Spotify's previous position that most listeners cannot distinguish lossless audio from compressed formats. The company cited research showing that audiophile listeners have grown increasingly vocal about quality expectations.

"Our subscribers have been asking for this, and we have listened," said Spotify CEO Daniel Ek. "While most listeners may not perceive the difference, those who value the highest possible quality deserve access to it."

The rollout will begin with iOS devices and high-end headphones, with Android and desktop support following within three months. The company is also introducing a new "Music Quality" dashboard that allows users to monitor and adjust their streaming settings.

Industry analysts praised the move as overdue but potentially transformative. "Spotify has dominated on the basis of its playlist curation and user experience, but audio quality has been a persistent criticism," said music industry analyst Mark Mulligan.
