The pound-for-pound great will pursue heavyweight glory after holding the light heavyweight title for five years.

UFC announced on Monday that pound-for-pound great Alex Pereira has informed the organization of his intention to move up to the heavyweight division, ending a dominant five-year reign as light heavyweight champion.

Pereira, who holds the record for the most consecutive title defenses at light heavyweight with 10, will attempt to become a two-division champion in what UFC President Dana White called "one of the most anticipated moves in UFC history."

"The light heavyweight division has given me everything, but I want new challenges," Pereira said in a video announcement. "I have always been a fighter who seeks the greatest competition, and heavyweight presents the biggest challenge in our sport."

Pereira will not be immediately ranked in the heavyweight division and must first prove himself against established contenders. UFC executives have indicated he could be matched against current heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane in a title eliminator.

The move creates significant opportunity for the light heavyweight division, which has lacked a clear contender for the vacant title. Several top light heavyweights have called for a tournament to determine the next champion.

Pereira's transition to heavyweight is expected to generate substantial pay-per-view interest, with the Brazilian champion bringing his massive international following to the heavyweight ranks.
